Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials
What it measures
The fire-resistance rating test. A full-size wall or floor assembly is built into a furnace and heated on a standard time-temperature curve, while load-bearing specimens carry their design load. The rating is the time the assembly keeps carrying load and stops the passage of flame and excessive heat.
Why it matters for a panel envelope
This is what produces a "one-hour wall" or "two-hour wall". It rates the assembly, not the material, which is why the drywall layer matters as much as the panel.
Guardian Shield™
Load-bearing exterior walls and demising and corridor walls have been tested to ASTM E119-08a. An ASTM E119 load-bearing assembly is available, and half-inch or five-eighths-inch drywall provides the rating required by the uniform building codes.
