Fire ratings explained: what a one-hour wall actually means
A fire rating belongs to an assembly, not a material. Two different tests do two different jobs, and a rating quoted without its hose stream is incomplete.
Surface burning versus fire resistance
ASTM E84, the Steiner tunnel, measures how fast flame spreads across a material's surface and how much smoke it makes. It rates a material and produces the flame spread and smoke developed indices the codes limit for interior finishes and foam plastics.
ASTM E119 is a different question entirely. It builds a full-size assembly into a furnace, heats it on a standard curve, and for load-bearing specimens keeps the design load on it. The rating is how long the assembly keeps carrying load and stops fire and heat passing. That is what produces a one-hour or two-hour wall.
Why the hose stream matters
An assembly can survive the furnace and then fall apart when a fire hose hits it. ASTM E2226 applies that stream to a duplicate specimen immediately after exposure. Codes require it for many rated assemblies, so a fire rating quoted without it has not answered the whole question.
The finish is part of the rating
In almost every rated wall the gypsum layer is doing much of the work: it protects the structure long enough for the assembly to earn its time. Substituting a thinner board or a different product changes the rating, which is why assemblies are specified rather than assembled from parts.
