Building in hot, humid and island climates

In a cooling climate the envelope has to keep heat and humidity out rather than in, and on an island it also has to survive the wind and the logistics of getting materials there.

Cooling changes the priorities

The wall still needs insulation, but solar gain, humidity and the direction a wall can dry become at least as important. A vapour strategy designed for a heating climate can trap moisture in a cooling one.

Air tightness matters more, not less: humid outdoor air leaking in is a latent load the equipment has to remove.

Wind and resilience

Hurricane design is about pressure and a continuous load path, and in the strictest zones it comes with product approval requirements on top of calculation. Factory-made connections help, because they are repeatable and inspectable.

Logistics

On an island, every material arrives by ship. Light panels that reduce concrete and steel deliveries change both the cost and the schedule, and a shell that goes up in weeks rather than months shortens the exposure to weather.

What Guardian publishes

  • The Jumby Bay Island Corp. headquarters in Antigua used Shield™ 6 inch R-24 walls and 8 inch R-32 roof with custom steel trusses clear-spanning the building; the exterior shell was completed in 2 weeks instead of a typical 4 months, HVAC equipment and operating costs were significantly reduced, and the building survived Hurricane Irma, a Category 5, without damage.

  • The State Insurance Corp. government treasury headquarters in St John's, Antigua was also built with the system.

  • Guardian states the system can be designed to meet the code requirements for high-velocity hurricane zones.
